Data Science Analyst Intern, Ask.com (OAK)

(Location: Oakland, CA)

Us
We’re Ask.com’s Data Science Analyst team: a fast-moving, data-driven, product-oriented group that works with teams to build systems and models that improve the way Ask.com responds to the user. A group of data analysts working alongside data scientists and software engineers, we love data and focus on turning language data insights into data-driven products.  At Ask, we empower each individual to succeed, communicate their ideas, and grow.  We are serious about creating and maintaining a great culture and are looking for great people to come learn about what we do.

You
You’re a bright, versatile, creative thinker who:

  • Wants to learn how to translate academic knowledge into practical business solutions to build products users love.
  • Has an experience and passion for working with language data (e.g. research, analysis, etc)
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and can adapt to shifting conditions, priorities, or deadlines.
  • Possesses great communication skills and isn’t afraid to ask questions.
  • Meticulous and detail-oriented.
  • Likes to understand the “big picture” and learn how things work.
  • Takes an analytical approach and has a talent for solving sticky problems.
  • Inherently interested in how people think and would love to see what types of things they ask on the internet!

The Task
Label, analyze and evaluate large quantities of language data using qualitative and quantitative methods.  Draw connections and derive insights from the data.  Translate your findings into actionable insights to help make choices and recommendations that will drive what we develop. Work closely with other analysts, to help data scientists, software developers and product stakeholders develop new data-driven products and to improve existing products.

This includes:

  • Conducting research and analysis to help define the problem to solve.
  • Preparing and validating data sets for natural language processing and machine learning algorithms.
  • Evaluating and vetting output of advanced algorithms and providing informed feedback.

Some specific examples of problems you might work on:

  • Deciding what types of linguistic patterns make information time-sensitive.
  • Making sure computer generated concepts are relevant and linguistically well-formed.
  • Deciding where boundaries between categories should fall (e.g. do “car rentals” go with Travel or Automotive?)
  • Be an advocate for the user and provide a strong human perspective to inform how we develop our systems, services and products.

Your Skills
We’re excited to help you learn about what we do and get hands on practical experience, and candidates that are a good fit usually possess some or all of the following traits:

  • Have completed or are working on completing an undergraduate or graduate degree in linguistics, library and information sciences, or related areas (e.g. other language/logic-focused humanities).
  • Previous experience working with some kind of language data (e.g. in a web/data-review environment or in linguistic research).
  • Basic familiarity with syntax and semantics and a solid understanding of how linguistic form relates to meaning (e.g. ambiguity vs. vagueness).
  • Familiarity with popular U.S. culture and the ability to use that knowledge to inform data analysis.
  • Basic familiarity with the Unix command line and/or Python is a plus.
  • Some basic familiarity with the concepts of natural language processing and text classification/machine learning.
