Guidelines for Proper Trademark and Service Mark Use

  • A mark must always be distinguished in print from the surrounding text. For example, the ® or TM symbol should always be added to any use of "Ask" in print to distinguish the mark from the surrounding text.
  • A mark should be used as an adjective, rather than a noun. For example, always refer to the "Ask website" or "Ask products," rather than merely to "Ask."
  • A mark should not be abbreviated, spelled in an inconsistent manner, or used to coin new words. For example, do not use "Ask!" in place of "Ask."
  • A mark should never be made plural or used in the possessive form. For example, do not refer to "Ask's website"; rather refer to "the Ask website."
  • A mark should never be used as a verb. We do not encourage users to "Ask" questions; rather we encourage them to use the "Ask" website to answer their questions or perform their web searches.
